Welcome to Eastern Artefacts

Picture

We specialise in unusual art and artefacts from around the world, but primarily China, Tibet and Nepal. If it's interesting, we go after it.

Of course we can't guarantee that every artefact is one of a kind, but all our pieces are limited edition. Most have been produced by contemporary artists and craftsmen, using traditional methods and materials, resulting in fascinating objets d'arts and true heirloom pieces.

Currently, there is a boom in censers (incense burners) and teapots, with craftsman and artists exploring traditional methods and also exploring new techniques and new materials. We are proud to offer an astonishing selection of these items.

Singing Bowls
We also feature a range of Tibetan Singing Bowls. These are imported from Nepal as it is not possible to buy directly from Tibet these days. The antique bowls are from Tibet, the contemporary crafted bowls are either from Tibet or were created in Nepal using traditional methods. If you are looking for a particular style or pitch of bowl, or an unusually large one, we will be able to obtain one for you, but do not keep these items in stock.

Ritual/Spiritual Items
From time to time we come across fascinating traditional ritual items, spiritual, religious, ceremonial. We'll be offering those as well. If there is something you are looking for, please let us know and we will do our best to source it for you.

Old versus antique
We are occasionally asked if our pieces are 'genuine antiques.' The market is flooded with bogus antiques, and we have seen some of our pieces sold as 'genuine Tang Dynasty.' Yes, we have occasionally found some brilliant authentic pieces, but we have also been burned.
With the ban on exporting anything over 100 years old from China, it is nearly impossible to purchase genuine Chinese antiques from the source. However, but there are many fabulous pieces that were taken out over the last several hundred years, so there are certainly authentic pieces available.
We do not specialise in antiques, though from time to time we may come across something that truly wows us and we are able to confirm its authenticity, in which case we will call it an antique. Otherwise, when an item is not new, we will simply describe it as 'old,' but do not call anything an antique unless we know for certain.
